Effective July 1, 2023, High-Impact Learning Initiatives became the Office of Experiential and Engaged Learning (E2L).
Georgia Tech has been swiftly turning its strategic plan into reality, and one important part of that plan is the Transformative Teaching and Learning (TTL) Initiative. The High-Impact Learning Initiatives unit, led by Christopher Reaves, has played a key role in advancing the TTL Initiative for the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE).
A year ago, as part of the ongoing restructuring of OUE, the TTL Initiative led to the merging of OUE's high-impact programs into one unit called High-Impact Learning Initiatives. This consolidation has proven beneficial, making operations more efficient and fostering collaborations among OUE programs. Now, with its new name, Experiential and Engaged Learning (E2L), effective July 1, OUE is aiming to achieve the goals of the TTL Initiative.
Georgia Tech's academic approach has always been "learning by doing," where students gain hands-on experience alongside their studies. This philosophy has been at the core of the Institute's identity since its founding. E2L will carry forward this tradition by bringing together undergraduate Co-ops and internships, undergraduate research, and student innovation and entrepreneurship under one roof.
Additionally, OUE plans to expand and enhance E2L's portfolio of experiential learning opportunities. This includes offering community and service-learning programs and working closely with faculty and various campus units, like the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Office of International Education, the Vertically Integrated Projects program, and CREATE-X.
OUE is also committed to continuing the strong ties established during the eight-year development of Serve-Learn-Sustain, which has now found its permanent home with the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems.
Alongside experiential learning, Georgia Tech excels in other high-impact practices. E2L will continue to support first-year and transfer-student seminars, GT 1000 and GT 2000, designed to provide a unique Tech educational experience. E2L will also maintain its role as a central hub for the living-learning communities that have flourished on campus over the past two decades.
The name E2L also encompasses future "engaged" learning opportunities that we may create or support. E2L's ultimate goal is to provide all students with life-changing learning experiences, enabling them to become creative, ethical, globally aware, and technologically sophisticated leaders who can tackle real-world problems and improve the human condition.
