Each year, Georgia Tech students spend months researching and working on scholarship applications from across the country and around the world. The scholarships are highly competitive among thousands of applicants and include notable awards like the Rhodes Scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, and the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. At the same time, Georgia Tech faculty and staff spend their time mentoring students, writing recommendation letters, and serving on committees and panels.

The months of hard work by students, faculty and staff was recognized on Wednesday, April 11, at the 2018 Prestigious Fellowship Applicants Reception, hosted by the Center for Career Discovery & Development and the Provost.

Kathryn Meehan Quinto (pictured right), Prestigious Fellowships Advisor, opened the event by congratulating the students on their hard work over the past year, and thanked the faculty and staff in attendance for helping students through the application process. Every student who applied for a prestigious fellowship was recognized with a certificate of appreciation. Kathryn noted that even though not every student was awarded a fellowship this year, the competitions required an immense amount of time and preparation, and it was important to recognize their efforts.

Two other high notes of the reception were keynote speeches from Provost Rafael L. Bras, and  Georgia Tech's Rhodes Scholarship winner, Calvin Runnels. Calvin (pictured left with Provost Bras) detailed the rigorous process of applying for the Rhodes, and thanked the faculty and staff who helped him along his way. In Spring 2018, Runnels, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will graduate with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry after only three years at Georgia Tech. And next fall, he will begin postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. Runnels is just the sixth student in Tech history to be named a Rhodes Scholar.
