Charles Hong, a Biomedical Engineering major set to graduate in 2025, is this year’s recipient of the esteemed ThinkSwiss award. This prestigious award takes Hong to Switzerland for an immersive research experience at the forefront of medical robotics, marking a significant milestone in his academic journey. 

The ThinkSwiss award aims to foster academic exchange and facilitate research opportunities for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students from the United States. Each year, a select cohort of students embarks on a transformative journey to Swiss universities and research institutions, nurturing cross-cultural collaborations and advancing scientific inquiry. 

Hong's passion for pushing the boundaries of medical robotics aligns perfectly with the goals of the ThinkSwiss program. With a vision to develop cutting-edge technologies that aid surgeons in conducting remote operations, Hong's research aspirations transcend borders, resonating deeply with the ethos of international collaboration fostered by ThinkSwiss. 

Reflecting on his motivations for applying, Hong remarked, "The testimonies from individuals who have participated in the ThinkSwiss program have spoken about how it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. ... I really wanted to expand my knowledge of international research and learn from experts in the medical robotics field." 

Guided by his passion for nature and exploration, Hong envisions his time in Switzerland extending beyond the laboratory. "I enjoy being outside in nature and exploring, so I really want to hike and ski in the Swiss Alps ... and visit Lake Geneva," he shared, highlighting his excitement for the cultural and recreational experiences awaiting him in Switzerland. 

Acknowledging the instrumental role of Dr. Karen Mura, Georgia Tech's Prestigious Fellowships Advisor, Hong expressed gratitude for her support in navigating the application process. "Dr. Mura was instrumental in helping me with my application materials. Having a second and more specifically experienced perspective on my writing helped me a lot with the type of things the admissions committee was looking for," Hong emphasized.
