Pre-Graduate and Pre-Professional Advising brought the campus pre-health community together on August 25 with a kick-off event that featured Dr. Damon Tweedy, author of Black Man in a White Coat. More than 150 students attended the talk and joined the tabling reception and resource fair that followed.
While fall kick-offs are a regular part of the Pre-Health program, the addition of a featured speaker demonstrates Georgia Tech's commitment to building community and expanding access — here to careers in medicine for underrepresented minorities. During his time on campus, Dr. Tweedy also lunched with members of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) and other pre-health organization leaders.
During his keynote, Dr. Tweedy intertwined stories of his experiences as a patient, a medical student, and a physician of color and spoke to the impact of the racial divide on American medicine.
After the talk, students lingered for a reception that featured pre-health student organizations such as MAPS, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the Undergraduate Public Health Association, the Stamps Ambassadors, and Student Hospital Connections, as well as clinical opportunities in the Atlanta area. 28 organizations and campus partners were able to connect with incoming and returning students.
